I played a magfed tournament at Outdoor Xtreme Hudson Paintball in May, and I walked away with two things. One: I'm older now. Two: I still have a lot of fun showing the youngins how it's done.
Most of the field was born after I started playing. The game has gotten faster — the guns, the movement, the pace. But faster isn't the same as better, and there's a specific satisfaction in being the older guy who can still out-think the field.
Not out-run them — those days are gone. Out-think them. Read the angle, take the position, make the shot count. The legs go first, but the eyes and the judgment hang around, and those win more games than sprinting ever did.
/ The First Strike Rifle
Which brings me to the FSR — the First Strike Rifle. It's a ton of fun, and it's a completely different kind of shooting. First-strike rounds are shaped projectiles, fin-stabilized, feed-sensitive, and more expensive per shot than regular paint. They reward accuracy over volume.
That's the whole lesson in one gun: precision over spray. When each round costs real money and every miss is on you, you stop spraying and start aiming. It's a paintball truth, and it turns out to be a life truth too.
/ Precision Over Spray
The younger players spray paint and lean on speed. The older player takes the shot. Both work — but only one is sustainable for another twenty years. The other is a young man's game.
I'm not trying to outrun anyone anymore. I'm trying to be the guy they don't want to face, because he doesn't miss.
