Rebuilding a maze for the Asylum Haunted Scream Park

Season one of the Asylum is done. The fog's cleared, the screams died down, and the maze is coming apart.

That's not a problem. That's the job.

We spent the fall building the Asylum from nothing — the maze, the rooms, the scares. By Halloween it was standing, and people came through by the thousands. We learned what worked and what didn't. Now we tear it down and build it again.

/ Season One, Done

The maze comes apart in sections. Wall panels stacked, framing sorted, the scares that landed pulled out and saved for the rebuild. Everything gets judged against the fall — what stopped people cold, what they walked past, where the line backed up and where it moved too fast. The second build doesn't start from zero. It starts from a season of data, even if the data is mostly screams and flashlights.

/ The Rebuild

The walls are going back up. The work for the second season is underway, and it's not the same work. Season one showed us what the maze should be. Season two is where we try to build that.

/ Why You Keep Building

There's a lesson in it that has nothing to do with haunted houses: even when you're done, you keep building.

The maze taught me that long before the tech world did. A project isn't finished when it ships. It's finished when the next version stops being worth building. The first season is in the books. The second one starts now.

Until the next run out — work hard, play hard.
